    As young adults, Fred and his brother Paul traveled to Montana to work at the Van Camp Ranch from June through August of 1935. They each wrote home once a week; two of those letters are attached.

    Founder of Gnaw Bone Camp. The camp began with a simple purchase of 46 2/3 acres in 1943 as a place for Fred to take Boy Scouts for weekend outings and grew to a rustic summer camp situated on over 1300 acres for young boys and girls.

    • Pet: Paul owned numerous pets over his life. He had a dog named Tag, possibly a Schnauzer mix. He raised two baby raccoons. When he was married he had a black lab named Nicky. That is the dog I remember. They later owned a small, black curly haired mutt named Bitty. Grandma named him after the Kibbles and Bits dog food. They adopted a raccoon named Mobley who first lived at Gnaw Bone Camp. He lived outside in a hollowed out log stuck in the fork of a tree right outside the porch. Mobley eventually disappeared, hopefully returning wild. And last but not least, all the birds and squirrels in the woods were his pets. Paul always made sure the wild animals had food.
