Benjamin Leonard (John1), born at Springfield, Mass., 5 Sept. 1654,
died there 21 Dec. 1724 in 71st year (gravestone); married at Springfi eld, 9
Feb. 1679/80, Sarah Scott [Scott Family, No. 1, i], born at Springfiel d, 19
Oct. 1663, died there 2 Dec. 1751, daughter of John and Sarah (Bliss ) Scott.
He was Constable of Springfield, 1700; assessor, 1704, 1705, and 1707,
Selectman, 1696, 1704, and 1707; fence viewer, 1693; tithing man, 1694 ,
1710; and Trustee, 1707.*
He owned a bull of repute, for whose use the Town paid in 1718 and 171 9;
and on 28 Jan. 1724/5, it was voted to grant "the Heires of Benjamin L eon-
ard Deceased the Sum of ffifteen Shillins for the Service of sd Lenord s Bull."
The will of Benjamin Leonard, Sr., of Springfield, dated 18 Dec. 1724,
proved 6 Apr. 1725, named his beloved wife Sarah, sons John, Nathaniel ,
Ebenezer, Abel and Benjamin; daughters Keziah and Rachel; daughters
Sarah Ball, Margaret Ely, and Martha Ferry. Wife and son John, executo rs.
Witnesses: Josiah Leonard, Moses Ingersoll, Nathaniel Downing.
