Joseph Gilpin, born in 1664, married Hannah Glover, in 1691, and wit h his wife and two
small children emigrated to America in 1695. They were Quakers, and th e rough experiences of their life thus far, warned them to seek whil e still young and strong a refuge in the New World. They knew that toi ls and privations awaited them, that each man must depend on himself a lone, the others, also, having all they could do or bear in the task o f subduing the wilderness and rearing a home. But they were children
of the martyrs, inheriting their spirit, and with firm trust in God fe lt no fear. Among the ship's company on the voyage hither, were the an cestors of the Coats and Morris families, of Philadelphia, coming lik e them to cast in their lot with the William Penn settlement.
They landed at New Castle upon Delaware, and wending their devious wa y through the virgin forest, settled near what is now known as Dilwort htown, Chester County,
Pennsylvania. The first want of the family was a shelter. This was qui ckly and cheaply found; a cave by the side of a rock, and no doubt nea r a spring of water, furnishing them a home. Here for some time they c ontrived to be quite comfortable. The tradition is that their thirtee n younger children were born there, but it is hardly possible that th e limits of a cave could have accommodated them after the first few ye ars, had such a residence been in other respects desirable.
It is said that Joseph Gilpin and company owned seven hundred acres o f land. John D. Gilpin, who owns a part of the original tract, has o n his farm the site of the cave, and
retains a small memento of his ancestors in a pair of silver candlesti cks. At his death in 1739, thirteen of the fifteen children of Josep h Gilpin were married, his grand-children numbering forty-five.
Soon after their father's death, Moses and Esther were married, the la tter in 1741 and
Moses in 1742. Then all the fifteen children were married. At their mo ther's death, January 12, 1757, there were twelve children and sixty-t wo grand-children living; in 1762 ten of the children, sixty-four gran d-children, and seventy great-grand-children. It was a very remarkabl e family.
Hannah Gilpin's mother was Alice Lamboll, sister of William Lamboll, o f Reading, England. She married first, Glover; 2d, John Brunsden.(?) * Hannah, daughter by her first husband, was of Fishingwell, in the pa rish of Kingsclere, County of Southampton; born in 1675: married Josep h Gilpin of Dorchester, County of Oxford, (a weaver by trade) at Baghu rst, County of Southampton, England, 12th mo. (Feb.) 23, 1691.
Joseph was the son of Thomas, of Warborough, tallow chandler by trade.
